Why visit Wadi Hanifa
The wadi was the reason Riyadh grew where it did - it carried the water. Through the 20th century it became the city's back yard in the worst sense, taking construction spoil and waste, until a rehabilitation programme cleared it and rebuilt the streambed as a working wetland with a bio-remediation system treating the water.
It now runs as a green corridor with walking and cycling paths, picnic areas and restaurants along it, and it passes directly below Diriyah, so the historic district and the valley can be done together.
