Overview
Edge of the World is a point on the Tuwaiq escarpment about 100 km north-west of Riyadh where the cliff breaks off and the plain simply stops.
Why visit Edge of the World
The escarpment runs some 800 km across central Arabia. At this point the wall falls away to a flat desert floor that carries on to the horizon with nothing on it, which is where the English name comes from. The rock holds marine fossils - snails and shells - because this was seabed long before it was desert.
There is no entry ticket and no infrastructure of any kind: no water, no food, no fuel, and mobile coverage that drops out. The final approach is rough track and needs a four-wheel drive. Go with other people or with a guide, and take everything you will need with you.
Sunrise and sunset are the two times worth planning around, both for the light along the cliff and because the middle of the day here is exposed and hot.
