Aja Mountains

The granite range west of Hail, dark red against the surrounding sand.

Overview

The Aja mountains are the granite range west of Hail, dark red rock standing straight out of pale Nafud sand.

Why visit Aja Mountains

The colour contrast is the whole character of the range: granite that reads almost purple at either end of the day, against sand that stays light. Palm settlements and small farms sit in the gaps between the ridges, watered from the rock.

Aja and its sister range Salma frame Hail city, and the roads through them are the reason the region is worth driving rather than flying over. The rock art at Jubbah lies out in the sand to the north-west.

Nearby: Hail, Umm Senman Mountain.

The mountains are crisscrossed with valleys and ravines, dotted with small villages, natural springs, and clusters of palm trees, creating a unique tapestry of life that reflects centuries of human interaction with nature.
