A full day out of Hail to Jubbah, about 100 km away, where the carved panels of Umm Senman Mountain (Jubbah) stand above the sands of the Nafud desert. UNESCO put the rock art of the Hail region on the World Heritage List in 2015 in two parts: Jabal Umm Sinman at Jubbah, and Jabal al-Manjor and Raat at Shuwaymis. This day covers the first of them.
There is a visitor centre at the mountain that sets out the history of the region and the carving techniques before you walk out to the panels, and no ticket is needed to enter the site itself. The driving is long in both directions, which is why this runs as a full day rather than a half. The Aja Mountains, the granite range on the other side of Hail, are a separate day.
Day by day
Morning
Early hotel pick-up in Hail and the drive out to Jubbah. First stop is the visitor centre at Jabal Umm Sinman for the background, then out on foot to the carved panels on the rock.
Afternoon
More time at the panels as the light moves, then a stop at Al-Naif Palace Museum in the old town of Jubbah before the drive back. Drop-off at your hotel in Hail.
