Al Qarah Mountain

A limestone hill in the Al-Ahsa oasis, cut through by naturally cool caves.

Overview

Al Qarah is a limestone hill inside the Al-Ahsa oasis, cut through by caverns that stay cool in summer without any cooling.

Why visit Al Qarah Mountain

The hill runs about 1.5 kilometres and holds 28 narrow, high-sided caverns, the best known of which is Al Nashab. The rock draws heat out of the air, so the passages hold a steady temperature while the oasis outside is well over 40 degrees - which is why they were used as shelter rather than discovered as a curiosity.

The caves are walkable, floodlit in sections, and reached from a visitor centre at the base. It is the single easiest stop in Al-Ahsa to combine with the oasis itself.

Nearby: Al Ahsa, Al-Ahsa Oasis.

Rising from the Al Ahsa landscape, Al Qarah Mountain is one of Saudi Arabia’s most unique geological and cultural landmarks. Formed over millennia by natural forces including water erosion, abrasion, and seismic activity, this mountain is best known for its extraordinary network of caves and passageways.
