The listing is for the landscape as a system rather than for a single monument: gardens, canals, springs, wells and drainage works, together with the historic buildings and archaeological sites inside them. Around 2.5 million palms are watered from natural springs in the middle of the Eastern Province desert.
It has been farmed continuously since the Neolithic, which makes it one of the longest-running agricultural sites anywhere, and it is still a working oasis rather than a preserved one.
