AlUla Old Town is a settlement from the 12th century that stood on the ancient incense trading routes and on the pilgrimage path. Hundreds of clay houses were built side by side here, and the alleys between them form a maze you can only really understand by walking it. The town had 14 gates, and the fort above it stands around 45 metres high and dates to about the 10th century.
The morning starts early because most of the town opens between 8am and 9am and it gets busiest after 3pm, so an early walk means the lanes are quiet. After the Old Town the walk continues into AlJadidah, the district beside it, before the drive back through AlUla. It pairs well with a separate day at Hegra if you are staying more than one night.
Day by day
Morning
Pick-up from your hotel and an early start in the Old Town, while the lanes are still quiet. You walk between the clay houses, look at how the walls were built and repaired, and climb to the fort above the town for the view back down over the roofs and the palms.
Afternoon
The walk continues into AlJadidah next to the Old Town, which is flat, shaded in parts and easy with children. There is time to sit before the drive back and drop-off at your hotel.
