Day tour

Jeddah food walk

  • 1 Day
  • Half day

A short walk and a long sequence of small plates. The route stays inside Historic Jeddah, the quarter added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, and moves between kitchens, bakeries and coffee houses rather than between monuments. You eat at each stop, so come hungry and skip the hotel breakfast.

Between the plates your guide explains what you are eating and where it came from, which in a city that traded across the Indian Ocean from the 7th century AD is rarely a short answer. Fish from the Red Sea is one of the things you eat along the way. The walk is an introduction to how Jeddah actually eats.

Day by day

Day 1

Morning

You are collected from your hotel and dropped at the edge of the old quarter. The first stops are breakfast ones: bread from a bakery working since before dawn, bean and egg dishes eaten standing up, and the first of several coffees. Distances between stops are short and the whole route is walked.

Day 2

Late morning

The walk continues through the lanes towards the savoury and sweet stops, with grilled and fried fish, small pastries and fresh juice. Your guide adjusts the order depending on what is open and what has just come out of the kitchen. You are returned to your hotel after the last stop.
